I usually paint from my own
photographs (35 mm slides) and reference sketches of the subject. I take
a series of photos, pick a few main compositional reference photos and
use the rest for reference on detail, etc.
Ideally, I would be able to see the subject in person
and take reference photographs. Actually observing and sketching the
subject helps me capture the unique characteristics. There's no
substitute for observation. No matter how good a photograph is, it still
misses many color and value nuances. Even if I shoot a whole roll of
film in one location, I'll still be better able to paint a compelling
painting if I take the time to observe, sketch contours and values, and
make color notes. It is not always possible to have extensive first-hand
contact, but it is ideal. I will often return to the subject during the
course of a painting to revisit a particular feature.
I can work from photographs provided by a
patron if the photo is very detailed and excellent quality. The print
needs to be large, at least 8"x10". I prefer using slides if
available. With a very large scale painting, working with slides is
better than prints. I am able to discern much more detail.

| Price
and Additional Costs |
|
My commission prices range between
$2.50 to $4.00 per square inch (e.g. 24"x36" @ $2.50 per square inch
would be $2,160.00). For very large pieces (48" and more in any one
dimension), very detailed pieces, or complex compositions the rate is at
the high end of the price range.
The commission price does not include framing. The
patron provides framing after taking delivery.
Shipping, insurance and handling costs are in addition to the
price of the commission and are paid by the patron.
Payment is made in progress payments:
one-third upon the giving of written approval of the preliminary design;
one third upon completion of one-third of the construction of the Work;
and one-third upon the completion of the Work.
